Petition  A CALL FOR DIALOGUE AND THE PRESERVATION OF A GENUINE AND FREE STUDENT PRESS IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS

A CALL FOR DIALOGUE AND THE PRESERVATION OF A GENUINE AND FREE STUDENT PRESS IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES OF SAN BEDA COLLEGE

In recent months, majority of the students from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), among other sectors of the Bedan community, have vented their discontent over the policies implemented by the new administration.

These policies, which include the non-recognition of the student Magna Carta; and the abrupt implementation of policies directly affecting the students (i.e., uniform policy and removal of departmental funds) by the CAS administration is a cause for alarm for the students, alumni, parents, and concerned outsiders for they gravely trample on students’ rights.

However, last October 1, 2007, the CAS administration issued another alarming memorandum that threatens not just the students’ rights but the very foundation of democracy in the campus. The memorandum directed the termination of the mandatory collection of the publication fee for the CAS effective the second semester. This publication fund is the life line of the 65-year publication, The Bedan. The publication that produced very notable Bedans, and which continuously renders service to the Bedan community not just as a student-publication but as recorders of our beloved alma mater’s history. Sadly, there was no reason stated in the memorandum.

Although the non-mandatory collection of the student publication fee is stated in the Campus Journalism Act of 1991, we believe that this move was unfairly done and was tainted with malice, for the following reasons:

The administration’s move came after the publication had been very vocal in defending the students against the policies of the administration which violates their rights.

After the October 1, 2007 memo, the editorial board of The Bedan sent two requests for a dialogue and explanation of the reasons behind the memo (before and after the semestral break) to the signatory of the memo, CAS dean Fr. Anselm Manalastas, OSB, and the rector-president Fr. Mateo de Jesus, OSB. However, much to our disappointment, the aforementioned parties have yet to respond.

In line with these developments, we are appealing to the administration to heed the request of the editorial board for a dialogue and explanation of the move. We believe that only through open communication that our problems and misunderstandings be fully resolved. In the long run, we would like to see that the school still maintain a healthy and supportive atmosphere for the student press. A genuine and free student press is the ultimate manifestation of democracy in the campus and only through the existence of democracy can the school truly uphold the values it tirelessly preaches.

Signed,
Concerned Bedans

I still dont know whats goin on. I dont know the exact details but from what I have recently read, there is a major problem that not only concerns the students, The Bedan but the also the employees as well. The uniform policy would not affect me as much as the loss of the school's publication would. What was the reason for it being terminated? Someone please tell me. And another thing, how did this new admin , new dean and rector come about? We need to trace the roots. Where exactly did al ...

Student press in every institution should always be free from any prying (implied/explicit) by the SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION as they should let its students freely express and declare (in a prudent way) the things that they deem true and proper. MOST IMPORTANTLY, with such intimation by the ADMIN., the essence of "student press" would be futile - are we in a military regime? Why is the administration SO EDGY with the publication?

HEY ADMIN! LET US NOT CLEAN/COVER A MESS WITH AN EMINENT PAPER...
